Sadiq Khan's hated ULEZ expansion had NO impact on air pollution while raking in millions from drivers
In April 2019, the Mayor of London introduced the ULEZ, an area in which drivers of more polluting vehicles must pay a daily charge of £12.50. It aims to reduce air pollution emissions from road transport and accelerating compliance with EU air quality standards. It previously only covered the same area of central London as the Congestion Charge, but it was expanded across all London boroughs on August 29, 2023. ULEZ is one of several London air pollution policies introduced since 2016 like the Low Emission Zone, Low Emission Bus Zones, and bus and taxi electrification. So scientists were delighted to discover an adorable new species of snailfish thousands of feet below the ocean's surface. The large-eyed pink creature was first detected in 2019 by researchers who were exploring the seafloor off California using a remotely operated vehicle at a depth of 3,268m (10,722ft). They came across this individual, an adult female 9.2cm (3.6 inches) long, happily swimming along amongst the crushing pressure, frigid cold and perpetual darkness. New analysis now reveals this animal was a species previously unknown to science - and has been named the bumpy snailfish (Careproctus colliculi).

People who live to 100 all share a 'superhuman' ability, scientists discover... could YOU be one of them?
People who live to 100 appear to have a'superhuman' ability to avoid major illnesses, according to new research. Two large studies of older adults in Sweden have found that centenarians tend to develop fewer diseases, accumulate them more slowly, and in many cases avoid the most deadly age-related conditions altogether--despite living far longer than their peers. The work, published by an international research team, suggests that exceptional longevity is linked to a distinct pattern of ageing in which illness is delayed or even avoided entirely. The findings challenge the widely held belief that a longer life inevitably comes with more years of poor health. Researchers analysed decades of health records to compare people who reached 100 with those who died earlier but were born in the same years.
Scientists discover a 'third state' beyond life and death - in breakthrough that could 'redefine legal death'
In sci-fi films such as'Frankenstein' and'Re-Animator', human bodies are brought back to life, existing in a freakish condition between life and death. While this sounds like the stuff of fantasy, a new study says a'third state' of existence really does exist in modern biology. According to the researchers, the third state is where the cells of a dead organism continue to function after the organism's death. Amazingly, after the organism's demise, its cells are gaining new capabilities that they did not possess in life, the biologists say. If more experiments with the cells from dead animals – including humans – show they can enter the third state, they could'redefine legal death'.
The real Atlantis? Scientists discover lost islands that sank off the coast of the Canary Islands millions of years ago - and claim they could have been the inspiration for the famous legend
Atlantis is the world's most famous fictional island, invented by Greek philosopher Plato 2,300 years ago. But Spanish researchers claim to have found the source of his inspiration – a series of sunken islands off the northwest coast of Africa. The former islands would have been close to the modern-day Canary Islands, but they sunk millions of years ago, the experts think. They've christened the now-submerged lands'Los Atlantes', in reference to the myth of Atlantis which still persists today. Luis Somoza, a marine geologist at Geological Survey of Spain (IGME-CSIC), told Live Science: 'This could be the origin of the Atlantis legend.'

Scientists discover why you forget some memories and remember others
Life events you take time to reflect upon shortly after they happen are more likely to be etched into your brain as a long-term memory, neuroscientists have discovered. The researchers detected a consistent pattern of neurons, or brain cells, firing a small symphony of concerted electrical signals, shortly after events that were later committed to long-term memory during that night's rest. While these bursts of electrical activity inside the brain -- dubbed'sharp wave-ripples' -- are unconscious, the researchers said a person could raise the likelihood that a long-term memory is formed by reflecting on an event the day it occurred. Their findings offer sound advice for those struggling to remember what they binged-watched on Netflix, TikTok or any other platform with auto-loading videos. 'If you watch a movie and would like to remember it, it's better to go for a walk afterwards,' the head neuroscientist behind the new study said.
Scientists discover for the first time that sperm defy one of Newton's laws of PHYSICS
Scientists have discovered that the way sperms swim defies Newton's law of motion, which states there is an equal and opposite reaction Researchers at Kyoto University found the sperms' flagella, or tail, propels the agents forward by changing their shape to interact with the fluid. Sperms do so in a non-reciprocal way, which violates Newton's third law because they do not elicit an equal and opposite reaction from their surroundings. The flagellum's elasticity also suggests that there should be no movement at all, but instead, sperms whip their tails without releasing much energy into their surroundings. Researchers at Kyoto University found the sperms' flagella, or tail, propels the agents forward by changing their shape to interact with the fluid The team used human sperm cells and algae for the research because both have flagella that help them propel through the liquid, New Scientist reports. Men's bulging waistlines are blamed for the worrying trend and'everywhere chemicals' in the environment.

Are aliens trying to contact Earth? Scientists discover a mysterious stellar object that emits a five-minute pulse every 22 minutes - and they have no idea what it is
If aliens were to contact Earth, what would it sound like? Such a scenario has been imagined countless times in science fiction but in reality we have no proof extraterrestrials even exist. That hasn't dampened the excitement that an advanced civilisation might be out there, however, and the discovery of a mysterious stellar object which emits a five-minute pulse every 22 minutes will only serve to intensify that. What's more, the scientists who detected it aren't 100 per cent sure what it is. An international team of astronomers led by Australia's Curtin University think it could be an ultra-long period magnetar -- a rare type of star with the most powerful known magnetic fields in the universe.
